Cassette+32pp booklet released 1982 by Graham & Parsons

After he released 4 issues of Acoustics cassette magazine in 1981-82 with Tom Reddock (see here), Mikail Graham went on to launch The Other cassette magazine in 1982 with George Parsons. At the time, the latter & Graham were DJing at KVMR FM, Nevada City, CA, though The Other two official cassette issues were not produced for airplay (see Graham bio here). Mikail Graham released solo music under the Young Penguins alias, though the photo in the booklet shows him, Parsons and Helen Perry as a trio. Graham was familiar with the San Francisco underground scene and Parsons and him also used to trade tapes with underground musicians through mail. This compilation is very much the result of a nascent network, though I had not previously been aware of such an early cassette network as 1982. The Other #1 is an exquisite blend of avantgarde tracks (Douglas Kahn, Paul Dresher, Philp Perkins, Charles Vrtacek), spoken word experiments (John Deaderick, Audio Letter), new-wave bands (The Young Penguins) and a handfull of American mavericks (Zoogz Rift, Rich LaBonte). The tape is perfectly mixed and tracks cue in effortlessly. Mikail Graham joined the Nevada County Composers Coalition (NCCC, created in 1994) in 2000, a contemporary music program launched in 1994 by Terry Riley, Howard Hersh, and William Jay Sydeman to promote new music in Nevada County. As a side note, from 1985 on Graham was assistant to Terry Riley. Download file includes 32pp booklet in PDF format. Thanks to Mikail Graham for invaluable help with this post.

It’s a lovely tape, I think. Thanks for dropping by.

Lovely post on this great labor of love we put together so many years ago. I would be remiss to not point out how important George Parsons was in creating both The Other #1 & The Other #2. Geo was/is an artist from infancy, and without his vision and connections to all of the artists included in these compilations these collections would simply not exist as you find them so wonderfully presented here by Continuo.

Btw if you’d like to see the booklet in a lorez mode before downloading it you can find it here:

Perhaps issue #2 along with the never released issue #3 will need to see the light of day sometime in this lifetime. Time will tell…

I am very glad this is available to those interested once more.

The booklet is a fine piece of artwork in itself. Thanks again Mikail.

Hi there. Hope you don’t mind the crass commercialism but your blog was the only solid info I could find on “The Other.” I wanted to let you know that I’ve just put issue #2 up for sale on Ebay. I included a link to your blog in the listing but let me know if that’s not acceptable and I’ll remove it. If you or any of your readers are interested, the listing is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130352143958

    Thanks for posting this info!

Better to link to the publisher’s official page.

My deepest thanks to you for this link, which for some reason I was unable to find. As it turns out I seem to have overlooked the fact that this originally came with an apparently VERY COOL booklet and I have revised the eBay listing accordingly. Thanks again.

My sister and I created that crazy track on there. I’ve since gone on to do a million other things, but the inspiration that Mikail, Tom Reddock and George Parsons gave me as a teen have lived on for decades. -Larry (Lawrence) Crane. http://www.larry-crane.com
