Real name Yutaka Tanaka (b1962), S·Core was an ambient-industrial musician of the 1980s and 1990s. A former member of Schematic Diagram (1982), he launched the Afflict Records cassette label along Satoshi Iwase (who designed the covers) and Kouki Takahashi in 1985, to release his music – that he had started as S·Core in 1983 – and collaborative projects he had with Merzbow, If Bwana, Telepherique or Rafael Flores – including mail-art.
Yutaka assembles his pieces from many interesting found sounds, surrealistic noises and synth-sources, which characterizes him as attentive and organic composer. His works have a narrative structure, place the listeners into an imaginary world, existing under deep-rooted influence of deformation virus.

His own music was more ambient than that of fellow japanese musicians of the time, akin to some of the fake ritual music on Cthulhu Records, 23 Skidoo or Zone’s Sword Of The Sun, for instance. ‘Dross’ is presumably the first S·Core cassette on Afflict Records, though being tagged ‘Aff003’ on the cover. The label’s releases amounted to more or less 12 between 1985-1988. At the time of his first 3 cassettes, S·Core used subdued electronics, piano sounds, bass drums, echoed industrial noises in the distance, tape loops and treated voices. S.Core is one of the greatest unknown noise artists from Japan. I collected about a dozen tapes and EPs. Dross is, as far as I know, Mr. Tanaka’s first release as ‘S.Core’ and it is among his strongest efforts. I may add that a unique trait of S.Core’s work is a sense of mysticism and Buddhist ritualism.
