A perfect introduction to the world of sound ecology as seen from the US. All today’s big names are here, mostly with excerpts from longer works now fully documented on CD, but hardly available at the time. A few names, though, would be hard to track down on CD as of today: Mary & Bill Buchen, Stephan Von Huene, Karen McPherson, Andrej Zdravic, Doug Hollis, Liz Philips, Leif Brush, Ron Konzak, Ellen Zweig, Peter Richards, Tony Schwartz. Furthermore, I assume the Pauline Oliveiros, Ellen Fullman, David Behrman and Paul Panhuysen tracks are unavailable elsewhere.

This sampler is all very ‘west coast’ sounding: spacey, open to the elements, involving wind and sea, open to exotic cultures, building instruments and processing sound through natural elements.

A 90mn k7 squeezed into a 90Mb file, complete with 42 pages color booklet scanned in hi res PDF document.

I remember this thing trembling in my hands the day it came in the mail from Non-Sequitor. I wrote to Brigitta Bertoia and requested designs for some of the Bertoia instruments. She replied “oh no, we don’t do that sort of thing”. On another note; what a delight to see the reissue of Alvin Curran’s “Maritime Rites” a couple of years ago. Thanks continuo!
