Belgian pianist Christian Leroy, born 1952, founded the Musique Vivante trio with clarinetist Philippe Saucez and bassist José Bedeur in 1979, only to change its name to Métarythmes De l’Air the following year, a name they kept to this day. Métarythmes belongs to this breed of Belgian chamber music-cum-jazz projects that also includes Julverne or Univers Zéro, as well as pianists Charles Loos, Dominique Lawalrée or Fred Van Hove. Both Leroy and Bedeur played with Loos, Van Hove or Julverne, for instance. All Métarythmes members are conservatory-trained musicians and regularly play with contemporary music ensembles as well as traditional jazz bands. Since 1994, the trio started creating original music for silent films like Tod Browning’s Dracula, Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North or Yasujiro Ozu’s I Was Born, But… Métarythmes evolved from simple duo to a large octet ensemble along the years, the core members remaining Leroy on piano, Philippe Saucez (born 1953) on bass clarinet and José Bedeur (born 1934) on electrified double-bass.

♫ There is something in the trio’s instrumentation that makes it sound timeless and detached, somehow. The bass clarinet and piano immediately conjures images of early 20th c. chamber music and salon music making, as well as a certain Art Nouveau air which is part of the charm of this record. But the imposing yet eerie sounds of the double-bass clearly belong to the free jazz and experimental music fields. As if to muddy the waters even more, the pianist is sometimes heard on percussion (#5 & 6), evidence that this is not your average pianist trio. The tracks are often miniature studies on short repeated themes, others are more atmospheric explorations with long-held notes. The superlative recording quality – courtesy of Igloo’s boss Daniel Léon – underlines the uniqueness of the instrumentation.
