WejdasWejdas was the duo of Donatas Bielkauskas (synth, flute, clarinet, field recordings, vocals) and Darius Gerulaitis, (synth, guitar, vocals), from Jurbarkas in Lithuania. Their cassettes were released by Vilnius-based label Dangus between 1994 and ’97. The label maintains the Wejdas official website. Wejdas play meditative and mystical music rooted in the Middle Ages Curonian tribes traditions from Courland, an area facing the Baltic Sea. Also known as Kurshes, these innumerable tribes spread across Lithuania and Latvia territory and are known for their paganism, animism and fighting skills.

Saulei Tekant, possibly meaning Sun Rise, was the duo’s 2nd cassette, published 1994. The music is made of sparse electronic sounds, echo ladden flute, mystical clarinet notes and slowed-down or manipulated spoken word written by Gerulaitis. The tape somehow succeeds as a meditative soundtrack imbued with nature contemplation, ancestors’ spirits cult and poetry. To call this ambient wouldn’t do justice to this highly personal project.
