Les Chanteurs des Isles du Vent – Carnaval des Antilles

This stunning LP collects songs used during the February annual Carnival of the Lesser Antilles islands, precisely Martinique, an overseas region of France. Culminating with the Mardi-Gras celebrations, the carnival and its colored street parades, or vidé in French Creole, are extremely popular in the entire Carribean area. In Martinique, the carnival is personified by a stuffed mannequin called “Vaval” ; the removal of Vaval – see “Vaval ka kitté nou”, last track – marks the end of the carnival. Despite this disc’s terrific cover pictures, the events are not so much infused by voodoo as a mocking celebration of the end of slavery. The LP was released by Parisian label Disques Déesse in 1976.

Directed by Louis Elie, Les Chanteurs des Isle du Vent (or Windward Islands Singers) are a troupe of musicians, singers and choir performing during street parades and related parties held during the carnival. Their peculiar, high-energy repertoire includes calypso and biguine arrangements with strong drum section, plus a remarkable clarinet player named André Sioboud as well as a lively trombone player named Al Lirvat. Delicious slices of Creole frenzy.

Papillon volé (lyrics):

Kannaval rivé
sé roulé krazé
Tout moun ka varé
Pou wè mas pasé
Vin kouri vidé
Vini défilé
Péyi-la surpri
ki premyé misik ou ka tann ?

Papillon volé
sé volé nou ka volé
Papillon volé
sé volé nou ka volé

kannaval fini
Tout moun ka pati
Yo brilé vaval
Dé koulè sèlman
Tout moun nwè épi blan
Péyi-la surpri
ki premier misik ou ka tann ?

Papillon volé
sé volé nou ka volé
Papillon volé
sé volé nou ka volé
