This disc was Patrice Sciortino‘s 2nd album after Les Cyclopes, 1967, posted earlier on the blog. Though he is better known today for his library LPs, Sciortino was first a contemporary music composer and Le Vitrail Eparpillé definitely belongs to the latter category. The LP’s title means “chattered stained glass”, as if the composer wanted to break down some icons with his music. The album’s concept is a collection of short piano tracks played by the composer on 3 pianos with the technique of re-recording. The idea was perhaps to recreate the complexity of Serial music… without the strain! The pianist eschews facile deluge of notes and virtuosity in favor of dense piano textures with firm melodic lines, omnipresent rhythm parts and delicate arpeggi populating the acoustic space. The tracks are lively piano Etudes occupying a territory between Charles Valentin Alkan’s obsessive archaism and the profuse creativity of Villa Lobos’ Rudepoema (1926). Also worth mentioning regarding the mix of the 3 pianos, is the fact one piano is usually down-mixed in the background to add relief to the music.

Thank you all for your comments. Maybe we should also mention the music on this disc is highly listenable and ear-pleasing – unlike some of Boulez’ or Stockhausen’s own piano sonatas.
