Spiral #03 – July 1989

Spiral #3 front cover
Spiral #3 tracklist

As substantial as previous installments, this 3rd Spiral issue by editors Willem De Ridder and Andrew McKenzie see the latter’s input more clearly audible than in previous efforts. The two instrumental interludes titled Gimmick are pure Hafler Trio, being conceptual music based on processed fridge motor recordings (my own guess). Brion Gysin‘s Dreamachine was an obsession of McKenzie in the late 1980s. In fact the interview included here was made for a video McKenzie was working on at the time, produced for Amsterdam pirate TV channel Radio Rabotnik TV in 1990 (see video here), with soundtrack by Master Musicians of Jajouka. Dutch sculptor, painter, photographer and film maker Henry Plaat (born in 1936) also appeared on some All Chemix Radio episode and is showing here his skills at glossolalia or speaking in tongues. The Chinese New Wave track deliciously sounds like smuggled from Communist China, while the commentary only adds to the paranoia. Also included is some jazz by the Gene Becker Trio and interviews with media moguls Stuart Wilde (see wiki) and Phil.

Richard Lerman (1980s)But the priceless dish on this issue has to be the Richard Lerman interview by Willem and Cora Emens, complete with piezoelectric contact microphones workshop and demonstration, and many music excerpts including various insect and location recordings, harpsichord strings installation, etc. At nearly 40mns, the track seems too short to this listener. Today, Lerman is recognized as an experimental music pioneer thanks to CD reissues of his Music for Bicycles, but I can’t imagine he was that well known in 1989. His February 2010 exhibition at Tempe, Arizona State University art museum looks gorgeous if we are to judge from the official webpage. Some Richard Lerman tracks were included in a Het Apolohuis compilation in a previous post.

These Spiral tapes are brilliant! Thanks for the work Continuo/anonymous.
I suppose it would be wishful thinking to hope for the full 12 issues?
