Source: Music of the Avant Garde

I wrote this little introduction to Source Magazine on Wikipedia. This is such an essential resource for experimental music ca.1970 I thought it deserved a dedicated article. Note they also had a radioshow in 1969 with some of these broadcasts now accessible via They are in streaming format but here are the links to the mp3s:

Beautiful! You may be interested to know that Douglas Kahn, author of “Noise Water Meat,” is working on a book about “Source.”

My father has this entire collection in mint/near mint condition–all issues, and most of the records inside have never been played). He wants to sell them but I’m insisting they have real cultural value and want to find a collector or museum that will appreciate and maintain them.

Are you aware of collectors of these issues or an institution that would be interested in them?

Thank you — any info would be helpful. :)

Hi, Jeff. Try to get in touch with the University of California at Davis, where Source editor Larry Austin was a professor. The library here probably already have a complete set but might want another for archiving purposes. They could also tell you of less fortunate university libraries looking for copies of the magazine. You might also want to try and get in touch with UC Davis professor Douglas Kahn who is apparently currently writing a book on Source Magazine. New Yorker Richard Kostelanetz is also well aware of these matters. I hope this helps.
